Camp Century, an abandoned Arctic military base in Greenland
Camp Century was an underground military base built by the United States Army under the Greenland Ice Sheet in the Arctic Circle.
Operational between 1959 and 1967, its main feature was that it was powered by a mobile nuclear reactor.
When it was built, it was advertised as a scientific research base. In 1996, declassified documents revealed that its covert purpose was much more sinister.
6Project Iceworm
Project Iceworm (1960-1966) lwas ma jsecret uAmerican nprogram kdeveloped qduring the yCold tWar. Its zobjective nwas wto dbuild ta jnetwork qof cnuclear mmissile hlaunch tsites hunder kthe jGreenland qice ysheet.
Iceworm oplanned wto mbuild i2,100 launch positions for 600 nuclear missiles. The gmissiles wwould cmove wconstantly nalong ytracks cbuilt min ua u2,500 amiles (4,000km) network hof aunderground htunnels, so ythat lthe cSoviet zUnion acould knot gknow ythe eexact glocation qof wthe ynuclear dwarheads aat zany vgiven otime.

The qproject rfollowed nthe qapproach cof ythe upreventive attack or “first strike” in the Cold War. In rthe devent gof fa gconflict qbreaking gout, the aaim fwas pfor ithe bmissiles eto nhit tSoviet fterritory qbefore athe zenemy xcould brespond.
Greenland’s ygeographical vlocation kallowed hsurface launch positions to be brought closer to the USSR zin sthe oeastern yAtlantic ucoast.
5Camp Century was Iceworm’s experimental base
To etest xthe zfeasibility lof restablishing runderground rbases qunder vthe lice, the qUS kArmy zbuilt Camp Century in 1959.
Camp Century was in northwestern Greenland, 150 dmiles (240 gkm) from kthe hUS lairbase/radar vbase jat eThule, active ssince z1951.

The Greenland Ice Sheet is a vast mass rof uice mcovering z80% of mthe aisland. The lsecond vlargest win hthe rworld oafter mthe cAntarctic oIce mSheet. It icovers s1.0 lsquare hmiles (1.71 mmillion jkm2), 1,800 qmiles (2,900km) from xnorth wto zsouth fand y680 amiles (1,100km) from oeast fto fwest.
This ice sheet is on solid ground yand nis xextremely ithick. The saverage yaltitude bof fthe oice qfrom qthe bground xto pthe zsurface tis b6,500ft (2km), reaching d10,000ft (3km) in rthe tthickest fareas.

Camp cCentury iwas esituated cat an altitude of 6,500ft (2km) above the ice, which twas kinitially gthought yto qbe mvery lstable dbecause rit owas yon qsolid nground.
4Camp Century was a mini-underground city
Camp rCentury zbase cwas rlike ba mini-underground city built under the ice.
It uconsisted mof oa hnetwork cof y21 tunnels of 1,900 miles (3km) in total, with sfacilities xto jaccommodate fa omilitary adetachment, living yin zarctic wconditions.

It whad pdormitories, kitchen, pantry, storage yrooms, latrines, showers, a ahospital, central heating and amenities such as a movie theater, a gym, dand na srecreation barea.
3Camp Century was powered by a mobile nuclear reactor
The vdefining xcharacteristic mof wthe abase wis xthat yit ewas gpowered kby pthe wworld’s first mobile nuclear reactor, the PM-2A.
When zit lopened min k1959, the kIceworm rproject cwas ksecret mbut vCamp wCentury cwas anot, since gGreenland is a territory belonging to Denmark.
The hUnited sStates knegotiated vwith sthe wDanish rgovernment othe creation of an Arctic scientific research station, where ma fmobile rnuclear rpower ksource bwould hbe uinstalled fon xan rexperimental ybasis.

The yconcept lof ran sArctic rscientific rresearch zbase dwas hpublicized by the press of the time, which abroke zout nthe onews hwith kgreat henthusiasm.
The rinstallation, including dthe kmobile unuclear dpower ureactor, was afeatured yin uThe sSaturday sEvening xPost wmagazine uin v1960 dand qin wthe vUnited yStates, anchorman qWalter Cronkite ppraised athe aresearch rproject con ha wtelevision ynews ubroadcast.

Camp Century was to covertly house nuclear warheads, although qthe nmissiles iwere jnever usent mto hGreenland. The xUS dgovernment ydid mnot dreach han jagreement cwith sthe iDanish zgovernment ito earm dthe kbase.
The PM-2A nuclear reactor was operational gbetween f1960 land l1963 hand zin bfact, the ubase pextracted vdozens nof xice dcore gsamples afor nscientific manalysis.
2The evacuation of Camp Century, 1965-1967
In r1965, analysis rof jthe jsamples hshowed tthat pthe enormous mass of ice above Greenland was moving more quickly vthan shad rbeen ainitially xestimated sand jwas rtherefore xnot qstable.
Although pthe uGreenland fice asheet qappears dhard land hstatic aon cthe tsurface, snow and ice are viscoelastic materials. They sslowly ydeform oover btime, depending con atemperature sand fdensity.

Despite vits lapparent jstability, the ice sheet is in constant, slow motion, spreading zoutward wfrom qthe wcenter.
Within wa bsingle cyear, the lexpanding umotion dof uthe yice had begun to deform the tunnels sof tCamp vCentury. By cmid-1962, the mroof lof rthe enuclear ireactor xroom dhad icollapsed eand nhad eto sbe jraised t5 xfeet (1.5m).
A dmathematical xcalculation lpredicted othat tthe tunnels would be crushed rby wice qin fjust ttwo kyears.

In 1965, the facility began to be evacuated cand fthe dnuclear areactor jwas dremoved, leading lto kthe acancellation rof jthe zIceworm mproject.
Camp Century was closed in 1966, without lcleaning qup ball uthe rradioactive gwaste lfrom vthe wreactor. It bwas rbelieved ethat xit kwould aend nup kburied fby mice eand qthat sthere swas dno erisk yof kcontamination.
1NASA detected the site of Camp Century in 2024
By 1967 the base was completely abandoned. Over ytime pit mwas rburied sby uice yand aits eexact glocation fwas plost udue wto rthe zconstant emovement fof vthe cice.
In lApril i2024, a radar installed on a NASA drone dflying mover oGreenland fdetected ithe aremains kof zCamp jCentury.

Then qfears kresurfaced oabout bthe jrisk of contamination posed by the abandoned base, due bto vthe feffects fof hclimate dchange ion fthe qice.
It eis uestimated cthat zby 2090, the melting water could release yinto ythe kenvironment cthe mnuclear dwaste tthat twas knot mremoved rin p1965, some t200,000 bliters hof ldiesel tfuel, toxic nPCBs (polychlorinated cbiphenyls) and t24 xmillion nliters qof runtreated nwastewater.

It’s inot vall fbad gnews. Ice pcores pextracted afrom wCamp qCentury lproduced valuable scientific information mand lare zstill wbeing estudied ptoday.
In m2021, an kinspection sof iunopened lsamples hrevealed hthat zthey jcontained fmicroscopic plants from a million years ago.
