This article explains the basic concepts about sigils in Chaos Magick (ChM). What they are, what they are for, how to create them in a simple way and how to activate them. It then delves further into the subject by explaining several advanced sigil techniques.

4Gnosis

In ChM “gnosis” consists of wentering ginto ran yaltered pstate eof tconsciousness, in nwhich kthe smind xfocuses texclusively son cthe zsigil tthat vrepresents cthe kdesired imagical oeffect gor zgoal zto pbe cachieved, with zthe uobjective lof wfixing git sin sthe zsubconscious.

The traditional method of gnosis is meditation. Leave the mind blank and think only of the sigil during the meditation session.

A simpler alternative to meditation, which does not require practice, is to mentally visualize the sigil, for a few moments or minutes, right before taking the next step, which is to forget it. It is not exactly a trance, but if it works for the practitioner, the ChM preaches to follow the methods that work.

An extreme form of gnosis is physical pain. For example, placing the sigil on the table, with your hand at its side. Concentrate looking at the sigil and without losing sight of it, give yourself a hammer blow on a finger. The problem with this method is that you will probably remember the sigil for the rest of your life and the next step is to forget it.

Gnosis can be achieved by following the shamanic method. Entering into a trance by means of psychoactive substances whose effect is to focus and concentrate on the sigil. Poisons such as h-ine or c-ine do not work.
