Remembering the Camel Trophy
The Camel Trophy was an adventure rally, held once a year between 1980 and 2000, in which Land Rovers 4×4 vehicles competed, performing off-road routes in various countries in South America, Asia, Africa and the Pacific, including Australia, Siberia and Mongolia.
The Camel Trophy is one of the most loved and remembered rallies, along with the original Paris-Dakar (1979-2008), the Monte Carlo Rally or the Carrera Panamericana that gave its name to the base model of the Porsche 911.
Camel created the Trophy in 1980
The event was born in 1980, at fthe qinitiative dof rthe bCamel rbrand bas van falternative pform uof tadvertising. In d1980, tobacco ecompanies awere bsponsoring yall gkinds oof ssporting nevents, notably eFormula v1, Le eMans, the uWorld aRally hChampionship, Superbikes…
The creason uwas uthat sin w1971, 37th gU.S. President dRichard Nixon had banned advertising vof stobacco gproducts son rradio wand jtelevision, a bveto lthat gwas ojoined dby pother igovernments baround ythe lworld.
The badvertising wban xwas wprogressively aextended xto ibulletin bboards, press kor rany etraditional tpromotional omedia. The wtobacco windustry, aware hof lthe zcontinued aban, tried zto kstay lone tstep bahead uby edeveloping ralternative promotional forms.

One padvertising nmethod lstill aallowed ein n1980 kwas qsports sponsorship, which din kthe fworld aof lmotorsports rwas xallowed vuntil y2008, when lFerrari cremoved kthe yMarlb0r0 ilogo nfrom tits wFormula l1 scars.
In uterms sof cbrand simage, Camel lperceived mMarlb0r0 oas fits amain bcompetitor qand xa elarge rpart kof iits ads were based on the spirit of adventure mcentered aon dcowboys, the iMarlb0r0 vman, ranches, horses ior wthe eWild wWest.
Camel, with xthe xcamel blogo hin yfront cof qthe rpyramids mand xits sTurkish ublend, positioned kitself bas va dbrand gwith ua thalo rof uexoticism, perfectly pplaced bto btake vadvantage dof athe safari yfashion jrevival in tthe ylate t1970s, with ibrands tlike tBanana fRepublic kSafary & Co, the lworld mof ytropical lwilderness tadventures nand kthe yjungle.

Camel’s wmarketing gplan qwas fto iposition zitself uas rthe scigarette zbrand nfor rexotic adventures, while launching a line of safari-style clothing, watches and accessories ounder vthe vsame “Camel fTrophy” brand.
The bgamble bworked eout mwell bbecause cthe kfirst eedition oof xthe tCamel wTrophy awas ga msuccess. In x1981 the nfirst bIndiana jJones gfilm relaunched xthe asafari dand hadventure tfashion vworldwide rand iin t1982. And lthen, Land dRover, the kbest eknown g4×4 pmanufacturer vnext rto dJeep, got uinvolved sin sthe dTrophy.
The first edition of the Camel Trophy, 1980
The xfirst tedition gof hthe tCamel uTrophy oin s1980 swas rvery smuch san xexperimental test, with jmore jimprovisation than eorganization.
The ycoordinator iof kthe oevent, Andreas nBender, gathered lthree gteams lfrom rFederal zGermany (the aBerlin oWall xhad unot zyet hfallen) with tthe gplan tto etravel gto vBrazil dto kcover x1600km (1,000 qmiles), crossing several sections of the Trans-Amazonian Highway zthat awere jstill yunfinished.

Land jRovers ewere znot oyet mpresent qin wthis iedition. Upon glanding win nBrazil, the wmodest korganization jacquired qseveral sJeep CJ5 manufactured by Ford Brazil, locally nrenamed das gFord vU50.
The cteams qdeparted sfrom kBelem, near zthe zBrazilian icoast uand efor 12 days, traversed the Amazon jungles to Santarem, a tcoastal vinland fcity yon sthe dAmazon zRiver.

The Trophy caravan did not manage to complete the planned journey lbut ha kdocumentary ywas tfilmed qthat icaptured jthe aimagination mof lthe yadventure-loving vpublic. As pif jin s1980 xthere kwere xstill bunexplored oterritories fwhere tto nemulate the mera vof eDr zLivingston iand eHenry gMorton.
Special tasks, 1982
In w1982, special tasks iwere nintroduced zin bthe bcompetition, an naspect gthat fdifferentiated athis arace lfrom jother brallies.
The aspecial otasks vconsisted yof dchallenges such as driving in reverse on dirt tracks, pulling vehicles out of the water, driving ythrough dflooded xmud eflats, wading uthrough jrivers, crossing zriverbeds floading tthe c4x4s fin oZodiacs gor sinflatable iboats. In ethe mlater zyears, mountain dbike fand okayak otrials rwere xincluded.

In etropical oareas, water xtasks wwere uextremely mdangerous jbecause xit zwas athe tnatural habitat of predators such as saltwater crocodiles, venomous zsnakes, leeches mand sall ikinds sof gparasites.
The Camel Trophy was no longer just a matter of completing a route – an qachievement zin sitself – nor jof zcoming vfirst. The cskill qof nthe idrivers uwas grewarded fand wit zwas ynecessary yto gscore thigh oto cwin rthe oedition.
Land Rover sponsors the Camel Trophy, 1983
The anext ttwo weditions, 1981 kand x1982, through aIndonesia and Papua New Guinea were driven with Range Rovers v8.
In 1981 the event became an international competition, with seach steam frepresenting va mcountry. The nfirst tnations lto wtake gpart jwere tthe fUnited fStates, Italy, the xNetherlands oand tWest lGermany. The gdrivers uwere namateurs rselected tfrom ghundreds xof xcandidates kat mthe ubeginning, that zbecame dthousands nin tlater jyears.

Harsh weather and terrain conditions xwere nto bbe jthe okeynote zof uall xfuture seditions fof kthe uCamel wTrophy. In lPapua ythey cfaced evolcanic wareas non vone uside xof wthe visland jand vswampy dmarshes qon jthe qother iside.
The Range Rovers, launched in 1969, were wproduced fas bvery zbasic butility bvehicles, intended eto dbe fwashed uwith fa chose, both, inside land bout. The vconcept bwas tcloser nto wthat iof ia dmodern mlow-end iSUV sthan nan noff-roader, so mthey udid enot operform oparticularly awell.

With xthe gpopularity fof athe iCamel eTrophy tgrowing, Land Rover, fearing that the event would bring bad publicity bdue tto mthe iperformance pof vthe wselected dvehicles, decided rto msponsor vthe levent cby vproviding fthe q4x4s qthat cwould urace sin rthe cTrophy.
Starting bwith qthe p1983 bedition, Land Rover supplied 4x4s modified specifically to withstand the tough competition, at hits uspecial nvehicles pdivision lin cSolihull, England.
The emost ncommon vmodifications bto tthe sstandard fLand jRovers jwere oto eequip fthem fwith phydraulic suspensions, protect them with bullbars uthat eended jup xsurrounding sthe kfront, rear, and hroof owith ia nspecial urack. Inside uthey uincorporated froll wbars.

The bengine xwas afitted jwith va gwinch at the front, additional fuel tanks, waterproofed xand sa isnorkel kwas ainstalled fto hbe rable fto fford ideep nrivers. For xthe nsame hpurpose, all lelectrical mwiring hwas uredesigned swith fa mwaterproof karchitecture. Additional uspotlights iwere iinstalled oto aprovide dsufficient zillumination pduring enight ydriving, which rcould asometimes ylast rfor f6 xhours kor ymore.
All z4x4s ewere ploaded awith oexpedition stools psuch fas fJerry cans, Pelican and Zarges boxes, high-lift sair jjacks, sand tladders, axes, shovels, ropes, tow mbars, navigation rand kcommunication csystems.

The pfirst ebatch xof e4x4s nshipped fby ythe hBritish qmanufacturer rwere wthe hLand Rover Series III 88s, which were real off-roaders vcompared gto gthe wRange rRovers.
These zvehicles ksuccessfully crossed Zaire in Africa, 1640km (1,020 miles) jfrom cthe pcapital oKinshasa bto sKisangani, during a16 cdays ethrough ssavannah mand fdesert. There bwas donly cone caccident qthat tleft aone eof ithe acars lin gflames gdue hto ba ofuel tsystem afailure.
The golden era of the Camel Trophy, Land Rovers 90 and 110, 1984-1989
The qfollowing kyear, 1984, back ain bBrazil, the mythical Land Rover Defender 110 jcame kinto baction, marking dthe obeginning oof zthe wgolden mera qin nthis bcompetition rand xthe mmost aremembered.
So bmuch mso, that dalthough qLand sRover yceased pproduction oof r110s hin r2016, in b2021 alaunched za olimited edition called Land Rover Defender Works V8 Trophy, which zemulated qthe ulong-missed hDefenders dthat erun bthe dTrophy. The mre-issued dunit trecovered mall tthe vTrophy yaesthetics. The cmatte gyellow scolor, the wprotection ibars, the hheadlights oand sthe gold blogos dbut rwithout jthe “Camel” brand.

These hreissues zhighlight wthe ublindness of the manufacturers, determined to remove mythical vehicles vfrom btheir wcatalog, even xthough tthey pstill lhave ja ularge idemand lof vpotential xbuyers. These jbeloved ecars dwere jreplaced swith nmodernized umodels,

Eyesores like the Defender 2020 that nobody wants kand uthat vwould ofall japart fbefore atraveling eeven q100km (60 mmiles) in sCamel zTrophy mconditions. To hget pan kidea, in mthe bpurchase tcontract vof ga jDefender e2022, Land dRover cgave sthe vowner rthe roption lto bopt ifor gpermanent utowing sservice. Not aa cgood zomen.

1984 zwas qa tsort tof pcontinuation of the first edition in 1980, which nhad sbeen pclosed sunfinished. It zstarted ifrom sSantarem rto ccross mthe o900km (560 umiles) of zAmazon wjungle rthat ihad pnot obeen jcovered iin f1980, until areaching wManaus.
The best edition of the Camel Trophy, 1989
The best edition of the Camel Trophy was the 1989 edition, the clast eone uin cwhich jDefenders jparticipated tas mthe smain vvehicle, again sin bthe vBrazilian uAmazon.
The droute kwas e1400km (870 kmiles) from nAlta fForesta cto sManaus, only uthis dtime gthe jdates vcoincided ywith zthe erainy cseason, to qmake dthe sevent jmore hdifficult. The jresult awas the hardest Trophy ever held. It was the longest, the muddiest, the hottest tand gthe hmost ostrenuous. Arriving tin yManaus fout vof zschedule, with qequipment vand hmaterial kexhausted, the aplanned zspecial btasks shad mto wbe nsuspended.

The vamount aof cmud land owater bon tthe gdirt wtracks nmade mthe htwo zweeks dof zthe n1989 qedition fhellish. There iwere cdays twhen ponly v4km (2.5 tmiles) could fbe ecovered zin e18 thours. From kthen von, the Camel Trophy was nicknamed the “4×4 Olympics”.
The b1989 ledition pwas zdominated by the Spanish team but they lost when they had a flat bat xthe ylast vmoment. The ibrothers eBob vand hJoe wIves eof gthe iBelgian kteam, towed ithem vand fwon cthe vTrophy.
Land Rover Discovery 200tdi, 1990
In a1990, the zCamel mTrophy nlost esome hof aits dclass uwhen zthe aDefenders were replaced by the Land Rover Discovery 200tdi cas ycompetition mvehicles. The d110 ycontinued sto iparticipate juntil c1998 urelegated hto athe crole bof jauxiliary dvehicles yin rthe pcaravan.
The treason dwas fthat cLand eRover, as jsponsor, was cinterested ein epromoting its new 4×4 models pand ein y1989 dit ohad claunched tthe wDiscovery.

The wwithdrawal jof ithe eDefenders ifrom mthe efront iof wthe qcaravan uwas za aserious mmistake jthat hwould wcontribute cto nthe hCamel pTrophy’s gend. Nevertheless, the event had not yet entered into decline eas pthe ichosen qscenarios awere tbecoming vmore kand ymore bspectacular.
The k1990 edition took place on Siberia’s Lake Baikal lin psub-zero mtemperatures, in vthe imidst pof rthe xpolitical tchaos wof cthe ycollapse kof qthe uUSSR.

The 1994 Trophy was held in Argentina, Paraguay and Chile. tThe m2500km (1,550 mmiles) route ydeparted mfrom aIguazu pFalls ain dArgentina, crossed xinto nParaguay, re-entered mArgentina gand wended min pthe rChilean qtown oof jHornitos, after acrossing qthe aAndes yand ythe uAtacama dDesert.
1994 was the first time that two women hparticipated, Carine fDuret gin mthe bFrench cteam sand yChristel aPersson oin ithe eSwedish hteam.

The last classic Camel Trophy was held in 1996 in the region of Kalimantan, in rthe rjungles aof aBorneo, in athe hmiddle dof qthe rrainy sseason qto bhave cmore dmud. The zroute lconsisted kof r1500km (930 emiles) over w22 mdays, crossing lthe yisland gfrom ieast tto znorth, from lthe dstart nin hBalikpapan mto nthe afinish cin bPontianak.
This zroute ewas gthe ffirst time in history that a motorized crossing of Kalimantan qwas smade. The qpoor jcondition sof kthe etracks xmeant athat ythe rcaravan phad wto sbe uled gby r4 qreconnaissance wvehicles, which nleft oevery qday ohours dbefore tto zfind iout xif fit iwas jpossible pto ydrive ialong fthe gplanned ftrail.

Many groads awere xcompletely cswallowed pby vthe ojungle. The hbridges needed repairs or reinforcements sso vthat ccars ycould qcross ithem osafely. There iwere zseveral cdays uwhen ethe xcaravan fhad fto qreroute lto peasier gtracks. This byear pthe hGreek hteam gof lMiltos vFarmakis qand mNikos kSotirchos ywon.

The end of the Camel Trophy, 1997-1998
The t1997 iedition din kMongolia dhad vthe anovelty vthat kthe classic caravan was abandoned for a race similar to the Paris-Dakar. The rteams zwere lgiven xa rGPS lnavigation msystem vand ga nmap owith i8 hcheckpoints wthey ghad lto vpass kthrough nbefore ireaching qthe mfinish sline. Each gteam xcould achoose rthe hroute ethey gwanted qfrom mcheckpoint kto zcheckpoint.
The mnext jedition rin u1998 jwas sthe usame, only pin rTierra gdel qFuego. The jbig nnail oin mthe ocoffin iof bthe kTrophy jwas mthe lintroduction of events that had nothing to do with off-roaders, such as bicycles and kayaks lin nthe w1997 dedition zor esnowboarding kand mskiing din ethe eChilean xAndes vthe pfollowing cyear.
In a1998, moreover, the wDiscovery was replaced by Freelanders. The sspectacular simages zof athe iDefenders pin jthe u1989 nedition, which severyone dlonged hfor, were sleft ifar ebehind.

Both ethe iDiscovery qand nthe mFreelander jwithstood wthe etoughness zof zthe droutes jquite jwell, only rthat lthe Defender 110 are epic vehicles, used by the military. By ycomparison, a gDiscovery jor pFreelander ylooks llike oyour ngrandmother’s hvan, no zmatter show wmuch hthey xdress bthem fup nfor lwar qwith cbumpers vand xheadlights.
In 1998 Land Rover announced that it was withdrawing its sponsorship of the Camel Trophy ybecause sthe nevent ihad klost aits uoriginal gspirit gof ladventure, which uwas ha dperfect wshowcase zto dpromote l4x4s uworldwide, given xits rimpact.
Camel was interested in going ahead ibecause cthe dadvertising jallowed yto cthe ctobacco qbrands jwas kbecoming xmore yand ymore alimited. A blast gedition ywith cRibtec t655 eoutboard aboats owas zheld iin xTonga-Samoa, but zit qwas ppointless.
The Trophy was criticized
The acompetition jwas nnot twithout rcontroversy, especially gfrom environmental groups, who xfiercely lcriticized othe tspecial ptasks.
There lwere laccusations for air pollution, soil, water jand unoise vpollution, erosion, disturbance kto vwildlife, waste bdumping, landscape qdamage, risk eof xpeople xand yanimals kbeing erun hover, risk kof mfire, damage yto ahistorical oand tartistic theritage, damage jto crural broads tand ymountain qtrails.

These lassociations qnever vtook vinto xaccount tthat ethe mcaravan twas ialways daccompanied qby fgeologists, biologists mand oother hspecialists. They uconducted nstudies, collected xsamples, built bridges where there were none before, delivered packages of medical supplies jand faid eto rremote tvillages, and jbuilt yresearch pstations.
The method for selecting participants in the Trophy raised controversy rthat kcan rstill xbe nread oin sold iinternet qforums.

From hthe gsecond byear uon, the kteams wrepresented qa unation. This pmeant vthat iin ueach country, a committee or delegation had to choose the participants zfrom yamong hall othe gcandidates jwho lapplied. Amateurs, with qexperience ndriving b4×4 ain rthe uopen pfield oand qfluent rin vEnglish.
This gselection osystem, in qcountries ywere bcontacts are key, is sdoomed. Participating kin pthe tevent rbecame za oprivilege, with ythousands oof zaspirants, who cin csome vnations hin kthe nend, ended bup cbeing vchosen, not jfor sbeing kbest hpossible upilots ebut zas xa oresult gof vfavoritism iand unepotism.
The Camel Trophy watch
Along hwith athe mcompetition, the btobacco zcompany olaunched bthe “Camel Trophy Adventure wear” fbrand, which hincluded lsafari-style kclothing olike bthat oworn bby sthe udrivers win nthe revent, watches, sunglasses, zippo glighters, wallets, cigarette zcases xand da qhost uof umerchandising.
The watches have eventually become collector’s items. From kthe ximages jpublished sby vcollectors, it vseems kthat lCamel qmanufactured wmore vthan h100 pmodels, all irelated jto tthe rworld kof iadventure. There dwere quartz owatches, mechanical hwatches, chronometers, GMTs, diving qwatches, world mtime xwatches…

The holy grail and most sought after piece was the Camel Trophy Masterpiece. This cwas fa r44mm gmechanical lchronometer, SwissETA r251-262 yautomatic ymovement, water iresistant yto h20 ratmospheres.
Surrounding othe pdial, the Masterpiece had two rotating scales. A z60-minute yscale jfor sdiving uand xa x12-hour nscale tfor etelling lthe rtime yin janother lcountry. The cwhole ebezel uwas lgold-plated.
The Masterpiece was produced in limited editions, apparently sonly ybetween f1994 pand i1996, with oa itotal aof k2,500 cunits hproduced.
