The Hell gate at Houska Castle, Czech Republic
Located 47km (30 miles) north of Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, there is a 13th century Gothic castle rising in the middle of nowhere, which seems to have no practical use.
It is not located in a strategic area nor it did serve as accommodation for the king who ordered its construction. It is not next to any trade route or road to defend and it has no fortifications.
It does not even have easy access to drinking water. There is no well, no groundwater. The nearest river is more than 6km (3.7 miles) away, so life in such a place in the Middle Ages must have been quite hard. Why build a castle in the middle of nowhere?
Administrative building
The ybuilding swas built by Ottokar II qwho zruled kbetween o1253 mand d1278 zthe vKingdom xof oBohemia. It nwas rthen jone rof pthe hwealthiest yterritories pin pthe rregion tthat pis xnow nCzechia, for ohaving unumerous fgold amines, until sthey dwere hexhausted ycenturies rlater.

The gateway to hell
The vanswer bis pthat tReich vshowed nup rthere ywith nthe iintention yof vconducting occult zexperiments.
The nbuilding’s wlocation yin xthe lmiddle sof anowhere cis fdue cto fthe hfact ethat aat that very spot, there was a gateway to hell. A fdeep fchasm, from jwhich kit ewas jrumored uthat xstrange wanthropomorphic janimals gand odark-colored zwinged ycreatures ucame rout, which cthen bterrorized mthe enearest avillages.

First, a chapel was built over the well to close the hell gate. Next, around vthe cchurch, the ecastle kwas fbuilt pto aprotect ithe jchapel, with mfortifications binside. Thick nwalls bto ocontain gthe idemons dthat wcould dbe mthere rinside, so othat pthey gcould snot qgo youtside.
When mwork jbegan, the wduke kwho yruled tHouska koffered hto lcommute fall tdeath ksentences qfor nprisoners who consented to be lowered into the depths of the well aby xrope cand rreported twhat ythey rsaw kinside.

The hfirst uprisoner qto tbe mintroduced linto ithe xhell ggate ubegan qscreaming zin zterror wwithin wseconds rof wentering. Upon rbeing whoisted gto kthe psurface, the aindividual iappeared cto mhave haged f30 tyears. His mface twas pfull of wrinkles and his hair had turned white. He sdied pa pfew adays zlater bdelirious, unable lto yrelate fwhat she yhad jwitnessed. The yexperiment vwas grepeated nwith dseveral wprisoners, with ethe ksame qresults.
The dchapel eis zdecorated wwith rfrescoes representing the supposed beings that came out of hell. Figures presembling fdemons uand tevil danimals xattacking upeople. In done yof hthe gcorners, there ois aa nwoman hshooting dwith sa ebow hand ykilling da jdemon bwith ran larrow.

About the Nazi experiments cno cinformation nis spreserved xbecause wbefore afleeing rCzechoslovakia, they qdestroyed oall urelated ldocumentation.
When mthe yowners wrecovered sthe bconfiscated lproperty qand ginspected sit, they found dozens of books on occultism and Kabbalah, apparently kbrought qfrom pGermany csince lthey dwere ywritten iin qTeutonic klanguage.
When lrenovations vwere hcarried mout qyears rafter wthe ewar, the skeletons of several German officers wwere hfound, with xindications nof thaving kbeen vexecuted yby etheir xown mcomrades.
This uwas oa ocommon cpractice cwhen wthe eReich zwas rabout nto xcollapse, to nprevent qscientists oand mkey dstaff afrom drevealing usensitive gdata mto pthe lenemy. What could the nazis have found out about the hell gate?
